We Like Grown Ups Too

We have been making a lot of effort since we started to reach out to the local community and talk about children’s books and kid’s literacy.  We have since the beginning highlighted those aspects of what we do, because it is what we are the most passionate about.

But we like grown ups too.

So many questions we have gotten lately have to do with whether we have books for adults.  I have met so many people lately who were shocked to find the selection we have of books of all kinds.  I feel like I may have done a disservice to the community by not talking enough about all the other books we have available.  We have many sections of sorted non-fiction and adult fiction roughly categorized by author.  This is getting better all of the time.  We have a full time staff member now that has over a decade of experience working in used book stores that will be able to move us in that direction.

In addition we are in talks with some chaplains and other prison officials to donate books to prisons, and we are looking for other ways to promote adult literacy in our local area  as well.

I recently ran across a youtube video about functional illiteracy.https://youtu.be/poZmf4JFVoQ Many adults in the U.S. have some basic reading and writing skills but aren’t able to use written language accurately and effectively.  The video states that number can be as high as 40% of U.S. adults.  That is alarming in our modern digital world where so much information is at our fingertips.

We really want to help make a difference there as well and we need your help.  If you have a group or organization that might be able to partner with us to help combat problems with adult literacy please let us know.  You can email me at greg@onedollarbookswap.com
